Security icon Security | Super Bowl site packed Trojan horse
Check your PCs if you visited this site in the previous week(s).
"Cybercrooks broke in to the Dolphin Stadium Web site and rigged it to load malicious software onto unpatched Windows PCs, security experts warned Friday.

Hackers reprogrammed the Web site for the Super Bowl stadium so it would automatically load a malicious script, Web security firm Websense said. This script would attempt to exploit a pair of known Windows security holes and install programs that would put the PC under the attacker's control."

Internet icon Internet | Space Invaders scene, seen from space
Some creative way to get noticed on Google maps laughing
"This is so much fun. Where to start? Okay. So in September last year a few of us went to the O'Reilly FOO Camp. It's an invitation-only event in Sebastopol in California where everyone's expected to present what they're thinking about or working on and where lots of fascinating conversations happen. It's an honour to be invited and my favourite event of the year. I wrote about last year's experience extensively with this post in particularMaps, Invaders, Robots & Throwiesbeing the most directly relevant to what I'm about to show you."

Technology icon Technology | SONY disses the porn industry
SONY will not be supporting Blu-Ray porn. I don't think SONY realizes how much money the porn industry brings to the current DVD market.
"Sony declared recently that it will not provide any help to the adult film industry for their movies on its proprietary Blu-ray disc format, but it will not try to stop them completely.

The Japanese electronics behemoth will not permit its disc replicating subsidiary, Sony DADC, to handle adult film titles, it said last week. It appears that in markets where Sony has operations around the world it won't duplicate any movies above a certain rating or that have not been certified by a local motion picture association.

This brings to memory the famous and largely disputed Betamax vs. VHS videotape war from the 80, a colossal failure for Sony caused (according to some analysts) by its refusal to license Betamax to porn industry."

Technology icon Technology | Intel Debuts Two Quad-core Server Processors
Quad processing news out of the Intel camp at CES.
"A consumer-oriented trade show is perhaps an awkward place for a CPU manufacturer to be releasing a server processor set, but Intel may be using its server performance jump as a leveraging point to push its Q6600, its entry-level 2.4 GHz quad-core processor.

The quad-core Xeon 3200 series targets single-processor servers, with the notion that todays 1P server could be as powerful as yesterdays 4Ps or, more realistically, a 2.5P. The 2.4 GHz X3220 will sell for $851 to vendors purchasing in units of 1000, while the 2.13 GHz X3110 will sell for $690. There currently is no 2.13 GHz consumer-grade counterpart in Intels quad-core line. Using todays CES news cycle, Intel was able to get these figures out to far more potential customers than for almost any other time of the year."

Technology icon Technology | PC users not hungry for terabyte drives
To think just a few years ago, 100GB drives were considered huge.
"Later this quarter HGST will launch its US$399 SATA Deskstar 7K1000 for the retail market, which should make it the first 1TB HDD to hit the market. However, it is the second-quarter launch of HGSTs CinemaStar version of the 7K1000 which is optimized for digital video recording (DVR) applications that may be more noteworthy.

According to iSuppli, the major use for the 7K1000 over the next 5-7 years will not be in the desktop PC market which is the traditional bread-and-butter market for HDD suppliers but rather in the consumer electronics and high-end gaming PC markets.

The sweet spot for HDD capacity in the average PC remains in the 100-160GB range, said Krishna Chander, senior analyst, storage systems, for iSuppli. So, 1TB drives probably will only achieve a 3-5% penetration rate in the desktop PC market over the next 5-7 years."

Technology icon Technology | Verizon offers live TV on cell phones
It also makes phone calls!
"Verizon Wireless and parent company Verizon Communications unveiled a new mobile TV service and an upgrade to the latter's new Fios TV service on Sunday at a press event in Las Vegas before the Consumer Electronics Show kicks off.

The new Verizon Wireless service will offer live broadcast TV on cell phones. And Verizon Communications will launch its next generation of Fios TV service, which is designed to let viewers search for content and access video, photos and games more easily on all screens in the home. Both services are expected to launch within the next three months. Details on pricing will be announced later, the companies said."

Site News icon Site News | You will be missed AMD_JuIIk13
Over the holidays, Brent Ross, one of our dear members passed away. Our prayers and thoughts go out to his family during this time. Dave "dave303" Nielsen has set up a donations page to help funeral costs for his family.
"Today the members of Gideontech were confronted with some bad news: the wife of one of one of our longtime members posted to inform us that he had died on . Brent Ross, 47, also known as AMD_Junk13, had been a member of the forums since August 2002, where he was well respected for his computer knowledge and his modding skills. His conversion of a Thermaltake Xaser II into an "" case with an internal configuration similar to high end Lian Li cases was in many ways groundbreaking. He is survived by his wife and two children."

Security icon Security | Skype worm on the loose
Users beware, new threat to the Skype messenging service.
"Skype is best known for allowing subscribers to make free telephone calls over the Internet. The company has more than 7 million subscribers and was acquired just over a year ago by online auction firm eBay for $2.6 billion.

Early reports indicate that the worm sends messages via Skype Chat, an instant-messenging tool. The messages ask recipients to download and run a file called sp.exe."
