We've been dugg twice this week, so our servers are getting hit hard. We've separated the site onto more servers, so everything ought to function as well as before.

Let me know if you see anything that is fubared.

Technology icon Technology | AMD to Publish Opteron Socket Spec
AMD is opening up it's doors, sort of.
"AMD's Torrenza Innovation Socket represents a new and different approach to server design. The idea is to let computer HP Multifunction printers - get a free 30-day trial today. makers pop co-processors into sockets that would normally only hold AMD's chipsets. AMD's goal is to reduce datacenter disruption and deployment costs and, of course, boost its sales.

AMD is getting industry support for what it calls its "open innovation initiative." Cray, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, HP, IBM, Dell and Sun Microsystems have licensed the socket technology."

Looks like there's a block in Thailand right now due to the coup.
"Thai radio, television and internet operators will from tomorrow face closure if they disseminate "news and comments deemed a threat to national security and the monarchy", Reuters reports.

The Information Ministry invited the companies to a get-together designed to "seek cooperation" in enforcing the order "to restrict, control, stop or destroy information deemed to affect the constitutional monarchy"."

God on the go?
"The South African wing of the non-denominational International Bible Society, which translates and distributes the Bible, said mobile phone users with the right type of phone could download the whole bible in either English or Afrikaans using the text messaging function SMS.

"The Virtual Bible will enable the Bible Society to supply the Bible to every modern cell phone user in a fast and affordable format," Rev. Gerrit Kritzinger, chief executive of the Bible Society in South Africa, said in a statement."

Security icon Security | Hezbollah hacked Israeli Army radios
Not very surprising in this time and age.
"HEZBOLLAH WAS able to hack into Israeli Army radio communications and accurately work out troop movements.

According to Newsday, using technology that might have come from Iran, special Hezbollah hacker teams monitored the constantly changing radio frequencies of Israeli troops. They were able to get a clear picture of Israeli movements, casualty reports, supply routes and mobilise tank hunting units."

Gaming icon Gaming | Xbox 360 adds 1080p Support
HD fans rejoice!
"You will finally be able to experience all 60 frames per second of visuals that your 1080p HDTV can provide. Unfortunately there has been no HDMI cable yet announced so this is only over component and VGA. Even better, users can expect 1080p upscaling immediately on current games and DVDs while native 1080p on compatible HD DVD titles."

Internet icon Internet | Talk like a pirate day!
Today is talk like a pirate day! Started in 1995, this zany creation has really taken off.
" Why do we need an International Talk Like a Pirate Day?

Make no mistake. We do. But it's a little hard to articulate why, especially when you've made the mistake of referring to your wife as a scurvy bilge rat and tried to order her back into the galley.

Talking like a pirate is fun. It's really that simple.

It gives your conversation a swagger, an eln, denied to landlocked lubbers. The best explanation came from a guy at a Cleveland radio station who interviewed us on the 2002 Talk Like a Pirate Day. He told us we were going to be buried by people asking for interviews because it was a "whimsical alternative" to all the serious things that were making the news so depressing.

In other words, silliness is the holiday's best selling point."

Technology icon Technology | A Chip That Can Transfer Data Using Laser Light
Intel has created a silicon chip that can produce lasers. So instead of sending data over wires, it may be possible to send over laser thus reducing significant bottlenecks.
"The development is a result of research at Intel, the worlds largest chip maker, and the University of California, Santa Barbara. Commercializing the new technology may not happen before the end of the decade, but the prospect of being able to place hundreds or thousands of data-carrying light beams on standard industry chips is certain to shake up both the communications and computer industries.

Lasers are already used to transmit high volumes of computer data over longer distances for example, between offices, cities and across oceans using fiber optic cables. But in computer chips, data moves at great speed over the wires inside, then slows to a snails pace when it is sent chip-to-chip inside a computer."

Gaming icon Gaming | Wii Are Coming
Nintendo fans rejoice! Wii release has been announced!
" Mario fans, get ready to salivate. Nintendo (OTC BB: NTDOY.PK) has announced the release date for its long-awaited Wii console. The system will begin its sales cycle on Nov. 19 in the States, and on Dec. 2 in Japan.

There's going to be a lot of excitement this holiday season, as Sony(NYSE:SNE), Microsoft(NASDAQ:MSFT), and Nintendo all vie for the coveted hardcore gamer. Granted, there will be some who opt to own all three brands, but let's be real -- most people won't spring for every system, especially before the first round of price reductions."
